Coronavirus and the Post; What to do?

Disclaimer: This information is being provided to help your Post leadership make an informed decision about what to do. This is not a requirement; the department is not and cannot dictate what local posts should do.

Should you close the Post Lounge or cancel events during the Coronavirus outbreak?

Governor Whitmer has been encouraging businesses and event planners to evaluate whether they should remain open for the coming weeks. As a gathering point, a Post Lounge could be susceptible to spreading the Coronavirus to its members.  Health officials are encouraging gatherings of 100 or more people to be canceled.

The VA has canceled events and, in some places, limited access to buildings, except through the emergency rooms. If you volunteer or have an appointment, the VA website is asking that Veterans and volunteers call ahead for the latest information at that site.

If the decision is to keep the Post open, the Center for Disease Control has an information flyer here:

The CDC also has a complete website of the latest information to help leadership decide what to do.

Like the CDC, we would encourage all members if you feel sick, please stay home or see your medical professional.

If the Post stays open, review the building cleaning procedures. A report from the Journal of Hospital Infections states: "That study, published in the Journal of Hospital Infection, suggested that coronaviruses could be "efficiently inactivated" with disinfectants that contain "62–71 percent ethanol, 0.5 percent hydrogen peroxide or 0.1 percent sodium hypochlorite within 1 minute," adding that other agents that contain "0.05–0.2% benzalkonium chloride or 0.02 percent chlorhexidine digluconate are less effective."

Wipe down all surfaces more often, and wash hands frequently.

Here are other resources available on the CDC website.

Again, how the local Posts proceed is up to each Post.
