Fwd: Memorial Day Event Comment from Department Commander

Commanders Comments about 2020 Memorial Day Events
May 1, 2020

Post Commanders,

The department has been receiving emails and phone calls about what posts can and cannot do for Memorial Day. What we know today is that Governor Whitmer has extended her Stay Home Stay safe order until May 28, 2020. Which is the Thursday after Memorial Day.

Yesterday, the Michigan Legislature met and did not pass resolutions approving those extensions, and now it may head to the courts to decide. Leaving all of us confused on what is legal to do.

My concern is for the membership. The department cannot tell Posts what they should do, however, let me provide the following.

I do not want to see the health of our members jeopardized. If your post organizes a Memorial Day parade or event, I will ask that you consider canceling those events. The current executive order does not allow a club (i.e. Post) to open for a Memorial Day service.  Many communities have already canceled Memorial Day events.

What about an event at a cemetery? It is outside. Again, common sense, if a large crowd comes, can proper social distancing be maintained? Again, we do not want to jeopardize the health of our members or our community. Talk to the cemetery management as they may not allow an event under the current executive order.
What about placing flags on graves? From a practical standpoint social distancing could be maintained in this activity, however, please work with the management of the cemeteries and local officials.

If you are unsure what to do, talk to your community leaders about how to approach Memorial Day.

Again, to ensure the safety of our members and community, please consider canceling your event and do it as soon as possible. Finding a video live-stream option to convey a Memorial Day message to the community. Once society opens back up a memorial ceremony can be scheduled safely.

Thank you for all you do.
For God and Country,
Barry Wood
Department Commander
